Dr. Chan Roonprapunt

Chan Roonprapunt, MD, PhD, is a neurosurgeon with the Chiari Institute. He has broad experience in the treatment of surgical disorders of the nervous system and a special interest in Chiari malformations, syringomyelia and complex spine problems.

Before joining the full-time faculty of North Shore-LIJ, Dr. Roonprapunt completed his neurosurgical training at Montefiore Medical Center and Roosevelt Hospital of New York. He was chief resident his final year of residency. He continued his training by completing an orthopedic spine fellowship at the Beth Israel Spine Institute of New York, where he gained significant experience in spinal instrumentation and the management of spinal degeneration and deformity. With a unique background in neurosurgery and orthopedic spine treatment, Dr. Roonprapunt is prepared to treat all surgical spine conditions by utilizing minimally invasive techniques such as decompression and stabilization. He also has experience in artificial disc replacement in the cervical and lumbar spine. Dr. Roonprapunt has contributed to many books and articles on intramedullary spinal tumors and brain tumors and lectured nationally on these topics.

Dr. Roonprapunt graduated from the medical scientist training program at New York University School of Medicine, where he received MD and PhD degrees.  His PhD thesis involved studies on acute spinal cord injury. He is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons and the American Paralysis Association. He earned his B.A. degree in biology at Cornell University.
