James Crawford, MD, PhD, Named Sr. VP of Laboratory Medicine at North Shore-LIJ

The North Shore-LIJ Health System today announced the appointment of James M. Crawford, MD, PhD, as senior vice president for laboratory services at the health system, and chairman of pathology and laboratory medicine at North Shore University Hospital (NSUH) and LIJ Medical Center.

Dr. Crawford joined North Shore-LIJ this month from the University of Florida College of Medicine in Gainesville, FL, where he was professor and chair of the Department of Pathology, Immunology and Laboratory Medicine. In his new position at North Shore-LIJ, Dr. Crawford directs and coordinates all components of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at NSUH and LIJ, and provides strategic leadership of the laboratory service line throughout the North Shore-LIJ Health System.

Dr. Crawford, who is based at North Shore-LIJ’s Core Laboratory in Lake Success, NY, is a diplomate of the American Board of Pathology and the National Board of Medical Examiners, and also served as associate medical examiner for District 8 in Florida. Previously, he was associate professor of pathology and director of the gastrointestinal pathology at the Yale University School of Medicine, and staff pathologist at Yale New Haven Hospital in New Haven, CT. Dr. Crawford is a member of and has served in various leadership capacities in professional societies, including the Association of Pathology Chairs, the Association of American Medical Colleges, the College of American Pathologists, the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology, and the Hans Popper Hepatopathology Society.

He received his medical degree and doctorate from Duke University in Durham, NC. He completed his residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. His postgraduate training also includes completing a fellowship in hepatic and gastrointestinal pathology, and serving as a research fellow in pathology and gastroenterology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. In addition, he was a Burroughs-Wellcome research scholar in hepatic pathology at Royal Free Hospital in London, England.

Dr. Crawford succeeds Leonard Kahn, MD, the long-time chairman of pathology at LIJ Medical and NSUH, who has retired.
