Former Giants Great, "Greensboro Four" Member Highlight North Shore-LIJ's MLK Memorial Service
January 20, 2009
Former New York Giants' defensive end George Martin, right, and civil rights activist Joseph McNeil, of Hempstead, NY, were guest speakers Friday at the North Shore-LIJ Health System's 39th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Service. A co-captain on the Giants' 1986-87 Super Bowl championship team, Mr. Martin completed a 3,003-mile walk across the country last summer, raising more than $2 million during his "Journey for 9/11" to address the health problems facing rescue and recovery workers who rushed to Ground Zero after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Mr. McNeil, a retired Air Force Reserve Major, was a freshman at North Carolina A&T State University on Feb. 1, 1960, when he and three other students bravely initiated a sit-in at a segregated Woolworth’s lunch counter in Greensboro, NC. Later dubbed the “Greensboro Four,” the students inspired nonviolent protests and economic boycotts that were a key component of the American civil rights moment.
