Bipolar Disorder - White Matter Integrity Study

Investigation of White Matter Integrity in Bipolar Disorder (GAC 0093)

Protocol ID

02.08.187

Protocol Description

This research study will examine brain structure in individuals with bipolar disorder using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), a scanning procedure that will take pictures of the brain.  We hope to detect the degree to which brain structural alterations might be related to genetic causes (i.e. what is inherited from your parents) and the potential relationship between brain abnormalities, suicidality, and impulsivity among individuals with bipolar disorder.  The scans of subjects with bipolar disorder will be compared to the scans of their siblings and individuals without bipolar disorder.  This study will enroll subjects who have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, siblings of patients with bipolar disorder who are not personally affected by the illness, and those who will function as healthy controls, which for the purpose of this study means individuals without bipolar disorder.  This study does not provide treatment.

Eligibility Criteria

Patients who have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, siblings of patients with bipolar disorder who are not personally affected by the illness, and healthy controls
