Southside ED Expansion Speeds Fast Track Patients

February 29, 2008
Southside Hospital recently added a 1,000 square foot, state-of-the-art modular building to its Emergency Department to help speed fast track patients from the moment of intake through discharge. With the new addition, the expanded ED now totals over 12,000 square feet.

The expanded Southside Emergency Department will serve fast track patients, freeing up the existing ED to serve more urgent cases.
The additional space is imperative, as many hospitals are at capacity and the need for non-urgent care areas is critical, said Anthony Pellicone, Southside’s administrative director of emergency services. The area will serve approximately 20,000 non-acute patients a year.

“With the recent designation as a Stroke Center, Level 2 Trauma Center and Cardiology’s elective angioplasty program, the expansion will serve only “fast track” patients, thereby freeing up much needed space for both emergent and urgent patients in the existing emergency department,” he said. “The treatment area in the new expansion will be outfitted with nine new stretcher chairs, so that patients can be easily moved without having to leave their bed for a wheelchair.”

The new unit also encompasses wireless transmission of patient information that can be shared by physicians and staff throughout the ED. “It’s an additional benefit in helping speed patients through the emergency room,” Mr. Pellicone said. “It allows us to quickly treat patients with less acute injuries and open up beds for those with more serious conditions.” The addition of the nine new treatment areas ups Southside’s capacity to 40 emergency treatment areas. “Adding additional treatment areas for Fast Track patients is extremely important when you consider our ED has 57,000 plus ED visits annually,” Mr. Pellicone added. “It’s a busy place that relies on speed and accuracy. This helps us meet both those needs.”
