Feinstein Institute Chemist Receives Prestigious Award for Alzheimer's Drug Research

March 7, 2007
The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research announced today that Yousef Al-Abed, PhD, director of the Institute’s Laboratory of Medical Chemistry, is a recipient of the Alzheimer's Drug Discovery Foundation’s (ADDF) second annual research award -- Novel Approaches to Drug Discovery for Alzheimer's Disease. Six recipients were selected from a highly competitive pool of 32 scientists from six countries. The ADDF is a biomedical philanthropy venture founded by the Estee Lauder family, and Elan Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a neuroscience-based biotechnology company. The recipients were chosen by an independent scientific review panel of 10 experts chaired by ADDF Executive Director Howard Fillit, MD, a leading geriatrician and neuroscientist.

"These awardees are conducting innovative research in Alzheimer's drug discovery. Their programs were recognized as most promising to advance the discovery of effective disease-modifying drugs for Alzheimer's,” said Dr. Fillet. “Thanks to our collaboration with Elan, we are delighted to present grant awards totaling $520,000 for this year's program."

At the Feinstein’s Laboratory of Medical Chemistry, Dr. Al-Abed and his colleagues are working on the development of an inhibitor of amyloid beta, the principal protein in the senile plaques of Alzheimer’s disease. The inhibitor disrupts receptor binding and protein assembly.
