Harvey Cushing Spine Center Expands to Lynbrook

March 31, 2008

Expert spinal care is now available in Lynbrook, thanks to an extension of the North Shore-LIJ Health System’s existing Neurosurgery & Spine Center in Great Neck, NY. The new Lynbrook Neurosurgery & Spine Center, part of the North Shore-LIJ Health System’s Harvey Cushing Institutes of Neuroscience, provides specialized surgical and non-surgical treatments by the region’s most experienced physicians.

Located on 306 Broadway in Lynbrook, the new facility is staffed by four of Long Island’s top spine surgeons -- Mitchell Levine, MD, M. Chris Overby, MD, Peter Hollis, MD, Mark Eisenberg, MD – as well as a rehabilitation specialist, Shaheda A. Quaraishi, MD. The 2,200 square-foot center includes three examination rooms and a large procedure room equipped with state of the art technology, including a C-arm chair designed for spinal injections.

The four neurosurgeons joined the North Shore-LIJ Health System in 2006, teaming up to open an office at 900 Northern Boulevard in Great Neck that specializes in the treatment of patients with brain tumors and spinal disorders. Given the demand for services from South Shore residents, North Shore-LIJ opened the Lynbrook office and arranged for the spine center team to get admitting privileges at North Shore-LIJ’s Franklin Hospital in nearby Valley Stream.

Among the most active spine surgeons with the Cushing Institutes’ Spine Center, all four completed their residencies in neurological surgery at Mount Sinai Medical Center. Below is a summary of their backgrounds:

  • Dr. Levine, chief of spinal neurosurgery at North Shore University Hospital (NSUH), specializes in all types of spinal neurosurgery, including minimally invasive techniques, and has extensive experience with radiosurgical treatments. He also specializes in microsurgery of aneurysms and brain tumors.

  • Dr. Overby specializes in the treatment of spine disorders such as tumors, trauma and degenerative diseases, with surgical experience ranging from minimally invasive procedures to extensive spinal reconstruction.

  • Dr. Hollis, chief of neurosurgery at Franklin Hospital, is a pioneer in the field of laparoscopic spinal procedures, treating a myriad of spinal disorders and pursuing continual clinical interest in general neurosurgery.

  • Dr. Eisenberg, chief of neurosurgery at LIJ Medical Center, is expert in the treatment of skull-base tumors, and pursues interests in all aspects of spinal surgery and treatment.

Dr. Quraishi, the physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist, completed her residency at the Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine at New York University School of Medicine. She completed a fellowship at the Westchester Medical Center, where she learned state of the art interventional procedures. She specializes in the non-surgical treatment of neck and lower back pain. She targets and treats pain in the neck, arms, lower back and legs using X-ray guidance and medicated injections to irritated nerves.
