Glen Cove Hospital Appoints New Chief of Plastic Surgery

Since 2003, Dr. Shons has been working with surgical oncologist Dwight DeRisi, MD, treating women with breast cancer. The surgeons’ plan each breast surgery together. The unique collaboration enables a seamless surgery and reconstruction process, without long delays and complications. “Glen Cove Hospital offers a unique environment to perform plastic and reconstructive surgery,” said Dr. Shons. “The operating rooms are state-of-the-art; the quality of care is excellent; and patients receive compassionate care.” Dr. Shons also cited the hospital’s successful orthopedic program led by Eugene Krauss, MD as a structure after which plastic surgery could model itself, attracting more community physicians to perform a wider variety of plastic surgery procedures. Dr. Shons received his MD degree from Case Western Reserve University Medical School in Cleveland, OH. Dr. Shons completed his surgery residency and earned a PhD degree at the University of Minnesota followed by a residency in plastic surgery at New York University Medical School. After completing his residency, Dr. Shons established and directed the Division of Plastic Surgery at the University of Minnesota. He then returned to Case Western Reserve University to head the Division of Plastic Surgery. Dr. Shons is a member of the clinical faculty of the Department of Plastic Surgery of New York University School of Medicine. Dr. Shons is certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Plastic Surgery. He is a member of numerous professional societies including the American Association of Plastic Surgeons, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Shons has been the lead author or co-author of more than 120 peer-reviewed journal articles and 43 book chapters and co-edited two text books.
