North Shore-LIJ Opens New Urology Center in Lake Success

May 8, 2007

LIJ Medical Center and North Shore University Hospital have combined their urology programs at a new state-of-the-art facility at the North Shore-LIJ Health System’s Center for Advanced Medicine in Lake Success. The 18,000-square-foot facility, known as The Arthur Smith Institute for Urology, brings together the skills and expertise of urologists from both hospitals to diagnose and treat urological diseases affecting both men and women.

Cutting the ribbon on the new $7.8 million Arthur Smith Institute for Urology are, from left: Saul Katz, chairman of the North Shore-LIJ Health System; Arthur Smith, MD; Michael Dowling, North Shore-LIJ's president and CEO; and Louis Kavoussi, MD, the health system's chairman of urology.

The Institute’s full-times staff, under the direction of North Shore-LIJ’s chairman of urology, Louis R. Kavoussi, MD, features internationally renowned experts in the minimally invasive treatment of urological diseases, including:

  • prostate cancer
  • bladder cancer
  • renal cell carcinoma
  • testes cancer
  • interstitial cystitis
  • kidney and ureteral calculi
  • prostatitis
  • infectious diseases
  • benign prostatic hyperplasia
  • incontinence

In addition to the urological services currently offered to patients at the Institute, future plans include the establishment of a Pelvic Pain Center and Men’s Health Center. The first of its kind on the east coast, the Pelvic Pain Center is being designed to advance the field of pain management while providing patients with the most up-to-date clinical care possible. The Men’s Health Center will be a comprehensive initiative focusing on common health issues affecting men, including, urinary incontinence, prostate cancer, heart disease, erectile dysfunction, depression and other urological disorders.

Built at a cost of $7.8 million, the Smith Urology Institute is home to 12 full-time physicians and approximately 18 visiting physicians from various multidisciplinary services. It includes 14 exam rooms, two procedure rooms, one urodynamics suite, a comfortable waiting area, and efficient administrative work spaces designed to portray nature’s flow by utilizing soft tones and earthy patterns.

The Institute was named in honor of Arthur D. Smith, MD, chairman emeritus of LIJ’s Department of Urology. Dr. Smith’s name and the field of Endourology are synonymous. During his 25 years as chairman of urology at LIJ, Dr. Smith developed a new approach to urology called Endourology -- the treatment of urological conditions using minimally invasive techniques. Because of his work, an increasing number of urological problems are now treated through minimally invasive procedures, which reduce the risk for those undergoing surgeries. In urology circles, his techniques became known as the “Smith Phenomenon.”

“Arthur Smith has contributed a lifetime of groundbreaking work that has changed the practice of medicine through ground-breaking approaches and novel therapies. He has influenced treatment paradigms and the care of millions of patients,” said Dr. Kavoussi. “The department is committed to preserving compassionate patient-centered care while relentlessly pursuing novel less invasive ways to treat and cure urologic diseases.”
