Arthur Smith Institute Appoints Joph Steckel, MD, as Vice Chairman of Urology

The Arthur Smith Institute for Urology at the North Shore-LIJ Health System’s Center for Advanced Medicine today announced the appointment of Joph Steckel, MD, as vice chairman of urology at North Shore University Hospital.
Dr. Steckel specializes in urological oncology, including extensive experience in the diagnosis and treatment of prostate, bladder and kidney cancer. He is one of only two urologists on Long Island – both work at the Smith Institute -- with expertise in performing robotic cystectomies for the treatment of bladder cancer. The Smith Institute is one of only about a dozen healthcare facilities in the US with urological surgeons skilled in performing robotic cystectomies. Dr. Steckel is regarded as a pioneer in developing continent diversion procedures for bladder cancer, in order to offer patients a superior quality of life. In addition, he has performed more than 1,500 radical prostatectomies. He also has experience in renal conservation surgery, which helps preserve the kidney while simultaneously removing cancerous tumors. Although he just joined North Shore University Hospital full time as vice chairman of urology, Dr. Steckel has had admitting privileges at North Shore University Hospital (NSUH) in Manhasset, NY since 1993 and previously served the hospital as director of urological oncology and assistant chairman of urology. During that time, he was in private practice at Urology Associates in Manhasset. Dr. Steckel is also director of the New York Hospital-NSUH urology residency program. Dr. Steckel is board certified in urology. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Additionally, he has served on the board of the New York State Society of Urology. He has been a district representative to the New York section of the American Urologic Association (AUA). Hel has also served as a New York section representative to Young Leaders in Urology, a select group of national urologists serving the AUA. He is the author of numerous chapters, articles, and abstracts in urology literature. He lectures often on urologic malignancies. Dr. Steckel earned his undergraduate degree from Harvard University, received his medical degree from Cornell University Medical College, and completed his general surgery internship and urology residency at New York Hospital. He went on to continue his post-resident training in urologic oncology at the University of California at Los Angeles, where he completed a Ferdinand C. Valentine Urologic Research Fellowship. In 2006, Dr. Steckel was honored by the Long Island Chapter of the American Cancer Society, as the recipient of the Physician of Distinction Award.
