May 17, 2007
The North Shore-LIJ Health System today announced the appointments of Susan Somerville, RN, as executive director at North Shore University Hospital (NSUH) in Manhasset, NY, and John Steel, as executive director at LIJ Medical Center in New Hyde Park, NY. Both are responsible for day-to-day operations at the two hospitals. They report to their predecessor, Dennis Dowling, who will continue to oversee both NSUH and LIJ as regional executive director.

Ms. Somerville, of Garden City, played a leading role in the development of cardiovascular services throughout the North Shore-LIJ Health System. She joined NSUH in 1991 as a nurse coordinator in the hospital’s Division of Cardiology. She was later promoted as the hospital’s director of cardiac patient care services, managing both diagnostic and procedural areas as well as the cardiac patient units. More recently, she has served as vice president of cardiovascular services for the health system. In this position, she was responsible for planning, managing and coordinating strategies for cardiac services at North Shore-LIJ’s hospitals.

She began her career as a registered nurse at Winthrop University Hospital in Mineola. She has extensive experience in cardiovascular nursing, with clinical expertise in critical care units and cardiac catheterization labs. She is a vice-chair of the Board of Directors of the American Heart Association’s (AHA) Long Island Region, and a member of the AHA Council on Cardiovascular Nursing and the American College of Cardiovascular Administrators. She earned a Master of Arts in Health Care Administration from Hofstra University, and attended the Wharton Fellows Program in Management for Nurse Executives at the University of Pennsylvania.

Mr. Steel, of Fort Salonga, had served as deputy executive director at LIJ in recent months, and prior to that, as the North Shore-LIJ Health System’s vice president of finance. In that position, he led a clinical utilization and standardization initiative aimed at changing the medical model of care at North Shore-LIJ hospitals.

He came to North Shore-LIJ last year from Carolinas Healthcare System/Roper St. Francis Healthcare in Charleston, SC, where he served as senior vice president of corporate services and chief financial officer; he also served as the organization’s interim president and CEO for one year. He earned a Master of Business Administration from the College of William and Mary.

North Shore University Hospital and LIJ Medical Center are the flagship hospitals of the North Shore-LIJ Health System, which includes 15 hospitals, 11 long-term care facilities, The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research, four trauma centers, five home health agencies and dozens of outpatient centers
