Growing Up on the Autism Spectrum:  A Parent Education and Skill Building  Curriculum

Protocol Description

The purpose of this study is to learn whether a 10-week parent education and skill building group can be helpful for parents of youth with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) in:
• Feeling more competent in teaching their children about sexuality, safety, and growing up.
• Feeling more comfortable about their child as an adolescent who is growing up and experiencing sexual development.
• Reducing stress reported by parents regarding issues related to puberty and growing up.
• Providing resources and knowledge about healthy sexuality development for youth with disabilities, and in particular ASDs.
• Helping parents with setting goals, behavior management and teaching approaches related to sexuality and puberty, and social/relationship development.

Eligibility Criteria

Children with pervasive developmental disorder (such as Autism, Asperger Syndrome, or Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified) between 12 years 6 months and 18 years old with a verbal IQ of 70 or greater and their parents
