Preventing Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in Children

Protocol Description
This study is a multicenter effort to examine pre-diabetic risk factors and obesity in a group of NYC middle school students and to investigate their response to a 3 month, supervised nutrition education and exercise program. Approval for this study has been granted by the New York City Board of Education, and by Middle School 74 (MS 74) in Queens.
Eligibility Criteria
All students in Middle School 74, grades 6-8, will be invited to participate via letters sent to the home, as well as an open forum for students & parents held at the school. It is anticipated that about 25-50 students per grade will choose to participate.
