LIJ Opens Zucker Sinus Center and Naymark Pavilion

June 18, 2008

To enhance clinical care and research specialties related to disorders of the ear, nose, head and neck, LIJ Medical Center today announced the opening of the Zucker Sinus Center and Naymark Pavilion.

Cutting the ribbon at a recent ceremony held to celebrate the opening of the Zucker Sinus Center and Naymark Pavilion at LIJ were, from left: Donald and Barbara Zucker; Saul Katz, chairman of the North Shore-LIJ Board of Trustees; Alan Abramson, MD, Abraham Naymark; and Michael Dowling, North Shore-LIJ's president and CEO.

The new $7 million, 7,000 square-foot building provides state-of-the-art administrative and research offices and exam rooms for the LIJ Department of Otolaryngology and Communicative Disorders. Designed with the patient in mind, the facility is spacious and modern and offers free, convenient parking. The building is connected to the LIJ Hearing and Speech Center, making patient visits to specialists easier and enhancing collaboration among colleagues.

The LIJ Hearing and Speech Center includes the Marvin Schein Voice Center, the Richard and Lorraine Abramson Clinical Center and the Apelian Cochlear Implant Center.

The Naymark Pavilion is named for Abraham and Ruth Naymark, while the Zucker Sinus Center recognizes Donald and Barbara Zucker for their generous donation towards the project.

With the new Sinus Center, LIJ’s Department of Otolaryngology – approximately 25 staff members – has moved from offices at the hospital to one, centralized modern facility on campus.

“This new complex provides a wonderful opportunity to expand clinical services for children and adults in a modern patient-friendly setting,” said Michael Dowling, president and chief executive officer of the North Shore-LIJ Health System, at a ribbon-cutting ceremony to open the new facility. “LIJ is the only hospital in the region to offer a full spectrum of medical and surgical services in the areas of hearing and speech and otolaryngology, and this new facility is another great chapter in LIJ’s modernization.”

“With the collective talent and vision of the clinical and administrative leaders of LIJ Medical Center and North Shore-LIJ, we are able to create a magnificent facility that will better serve our patients and our physicians in one comfortable, service-oriented center,” said Allan Abramson, MD, chairman of otolaryngology and communicative disorders at LIJ and North Shore University Hospital.

Mark Shikowitz, MD, LIJ’s vice chairman of otolaryngology and communicative disorders, has been appointed director of sinus surgery at the hospital’s new center.

Aside from its clinical expertise, the new Sinus Center features a one-of-a-kind, chainsaw-carved mural made of myrtle wood (found only in Oregon and Israel). The 15-foot by 10-foot mural, weighing more than 2,500 pounds, carved by artist Paul Stark of Oregon, shows in incredible detail the threatened and endangered animals of Israel and the United States. Mr. Stark was commissioned by Dr. Abramson, through an anonymous donor, to create the striking artwork.

The Department of Otolaryngology delivers coverage of the full spectrum of medical and surgical problems of the head and neck for adults and children, including thyroid and parathyroid surgery, hearing and balance, tinnitus, skull base surgery, swallowing disorders, respiratory papillomas, facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, salivary gland disorder, head and neck oncology, otology and neurotology, sleep apnea, voice and laryngeal disorders, airway disorders, and diseases of the sinus and nose.
