Pediatric Serotonin Metabolism Study

Serotonin Metabolism in Children with Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders: The Impact of Persistent Inflammation GAC # 0186

Protocol ID

07-096

Protocol Description

The purpose of this study is to look at how the human body uses serotonin (a chemical in the body) and how this use affects the motility (movement) and inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract.

New medications for adults with functional gastrointestinal complaints have been shown to be successful in reducing such symptoms. These medications are used to correct abnormalities in how the body uses serotonin (metabolism).

These abnormalities in serotonin metabolism have not been studied in children. Understanding them in children could lead to more effective therapy for children with functional gastrointestinal disease.
