Swallowing Therapy Study

The Evaluation of a Non-Invasive Dysphagia Metric System in Patients Undergoing Swallowing Therapy

Protocol ID

07-130

Protocol Description

The primary purpose of this research study is to evaluate a new experimental non-invasive device for measuring difficulty swallowing (called dysphagia). The device is called the Non-Invasive Dyphagia Metric System (NIDYMS), designed to measure the effectiveness of swallowing therapy. The NIDYMS uses a beam of light (laser) to measure the movement of the jaw during swallowing.

This research may provide information about the potential of this new instrument for tracking improvement after standard swallowing therapy. The results of this study may aid future patients by providing an easy and safe way to monitor the progress of swallowing therapy.

Eligibility Criteria

Patients with swallowing problems related to neurological disorders who are undergoing swallowing therapy at the Center for Speech and Hearing at Long Island Jewish Medical Center (LIJMC)
