North Shore-LIJ Appoints New Chairman of Rehabilitation Services

The North Shore-LIJ Health System today announced the appointment of Adam B. Stein, MD, as chairman of the newly created Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, based at 825 Northern Blvd. in Great Neck, NY. In this new position, Dr. Stein will coordinate physical medicine and rehabilitation services and education across the health system’s hospitals throughout Long Island and Queens.

“As North Shore-LIJ continues to develop its Institute for Orthopedic Science, the Harvey Cushing Institutes of Neuroscience and other specialty centers in which rehabilitation is a vital component, Dr. Stein will focus on developing and implementing a strategic plan for rehabilitation medicine, promoting utilization of services throughout the continuum and developing programs that will distinguish North Shore-LIJ’s expertise in neuromuscular and musculoskeletal rehabilitation,” said Lawrence G. Smith, MD, the health system’s chief medical officer.

In his new position, Dr. Stein will also help develop medical education curriculum in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the proposed Hofstra University School of Medicine being developed in partnership with North Shore-LIJ – the school is scheduled to open in 2011.

Board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation, Dr. Stein was a member of the faculty of Mount Sinai School of Medicine since 1991, where he held the position of residency program director for the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine’s programs in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Spinal Cord Injury Medicine.

Dr. Stein will work closely with Matthew M. Shatzer, DO, North Shore-LIJ’s newly appointed residency program director, to enhance medical education among residents in physical medicine and rehabilitation rotations at North Shore University Hospital, LIJ Medical Center, Glen Cove Hospital and Southside Hospital. Dr. Shatzer had been the clinical director of consultation services at the Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation in New Jersey. He is a graduate of the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. Shatzer is board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation and spinal cord injury medicine.

Dr. Stein, who will also have an office at Glen Cove Hospital, is a graduate of the New York University School of Medicine and the Residency Training Program in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at New York University-Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine. He is member of numerous professional societies, including the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, the American Spinal Injury Association, the American Paraplegia Society and the Association of Academic Physiatrists.

Dr. Stein has extensive expertise in the treatment of persons with spinal cord injury and disease, multiple sclerosis and stroke, as well as other neurological conditions, such as Guillain-Barre Syndrome.
