Diabetes Study

The Association of Elevated Random Blood Glucose with Undiagnosed Diabetes or Pre-Diabetes Among Pediatric Emergency Department Patients

Protocol ID

08-046

Protocol Description

The purpose of this study is to determine if the level of blood sugar found in the emergency room (ER) can be used to diagnose diabetes. An elevated blood sugar found in the ER is often attributed to the stress of the acute illness or a recent meal. If we find that an elevated ER blood sugar is often a result of undiagnosed diabetes or ‘prediabetes’, we can refer individuals with high blood sugars to their doctors for care. While it is likely that higher blood sugars increase the chances for having diabetes, there may be some people with ‘normal’ blood sugars who are also found to be diabetic. This could happen because some people will decrease food intake during the acute illness.
