Prostate Cancer - Clinical Trial (08-06-197)

A Multicenter, Randomized, Double-Blind Study Comparing the Efficacy and Safety of Aflibercept Versus Placebo Administered Every 3 Weeks in Patients Treated with Docetaxel / Prednisone for Metastatic Androgen-Independent Prostate Cancer

Protocol ID

08-06-197

Protocol Description

Docetaxel is a drug that is already approved for use in treating prostate cancer. This clinical research study will be evaluating docetaxel alone and in combination with an experimental drug called aflibercept.

Part of the reason tumors are able to grow and spread in the body is because of a substance called vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), which is made by many types of cancer cells. VEGF causes the growth of new blood vessels into tumors, giving them nourishment and maintaining their ability to grow and spread. Research studies have shown that an experimental drug, aflibercept, blocks the ability of VEFG to cause formation and growth of new blood vessels in tumors.

The purpose of this study is to determine if aflibercept is better than placebo, when combined with docetaxel, for the treatment of prostate cancer.
