Bipolar Susceptibility Study

Bipolar Susceptibility Loci and Treatment Response in African American Patients

Protocol ID

08-132

Protocol Description

The purpose of this study is to identify forms of genes (the material that is passed to children from their parents) that are associated with how black patients, who are descended from peoples of African origin, respond to treatment with the medication, risperidone. This research may lead to a better understanding of treatment response (and eventually lead to improved treatment or management). The research may also eventually produce a test that can predict who is likely to respond well (or poorly) to treatment with risperidone.

Eligibility Criteria

Patients descended from peoples of African origin who are beginning treatment with risperidone as part of standard care
