Pelvic Pain Study

Correlation of Symptoms to the Location of Myofascial Pain in the Chronic Pelvic Pain Patient

Protocol ID

08-274

Protocol Description

The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between the distribution of trigger points throughout your pelvic area with the pelvic pain symptoms you may be experiencing.  Trigger points are areas of tight muscle that are sensitive to touch.  Specifically, we want to see if we can identify an association between the location of trigger points and pelvic pain symptoms in order to more effectively diagnose and treat patients with chronic pelvic pain.
Previous research has validated the presence of these trigger points.  However, this is the first study to look at the correlation between the location and quality of pain with symptoms specific to chronic pelvic pain.  We envision that information derived from this study will enable clinicians to better focus their physical examination based upon the patient's description of pain.
