LIJ Opens Coronary Care Unit

August 13, 2007
LIJ Medical Center recently celebrated the opening of a 14-bed Coronary Care Unit, which marked the final phase of a $27.5 million construction project that added 40 new critical care beds to the hospital.

Cutting the ribbon on LIJ Medical Center’s new Coronary Care Unit (CCU) were, from left: Saul Katz, chairman of the North Shore-LIJ Health System; Joanne Lyons, RN; Stacey Rosen, MD, LIJ’s chief of cardiology; Michael Dowling, the North Shore-LIJ Health System’s president and CEO; John Steel, LIJ’s executive director; Elizabeth O’Mara, RN, the CCU’s nurse manager; Bart Steinberg, MD, the CCU’s director; and Stanley Katz, MD, the North Shore-LIJ Health System’s senior vice president of cardiovascular services.

The Coronary Care Unit is located on top of LIJ's new Emergency Department and next to the hospital's existing Cardiac Catheterization Suite. The strategic location of the 8,000-square-foot unit significantly enhances the hospital’s ability to care for critically ill cardiac patients. Among other features, the unit includes:

• Decentralized nurse work stations located directly in front of patients' rooms. With computer access and monitoring equipment at the bedside, nurses have immediate access to vital clinical data, allowing them to reach patients and emergency equipment rapidly whenever quick action is necessary.

• Single-patient rooms furnished with comfortable sofas and chairs so family members can stay with their loved ones.

In addition to the Coronary Care Unit, LIJ this spring opened a 13-bed Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and a 13-bed Surgical ICU. The 40 new critical care beds within the new 21,000-square-foot facility expands the hospital’s total critical care capacity to 72 beds, enabling the hospital to better meet the growing needs of the area’s aging population. Earlier this month, LIJ also opened the first phase of the Phyllis and William Mack Emergency Center.
