Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia Study
NSUH: 0386 DFCI ALL Adult Consortium Protocol: Treatment of Older Adults with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia
Protocol ID
Protocol Description
The purpose of this study is to determine the safety and effectiveness of a multi-drug regimen including prednisone, vincristine, cytarabine, doxorubicin, 6 mercaptopurine, and methotrexate, in combination with PEG-asparaginase and clofarabine to treat older adults with ALL. PEG-asparaginase has been used in chemotherapy treatment regimens for both children and adults with ALL. Clofarabine has been used in chemotherapy treatment regimens for children with ALL, and has been shown to decrease the number of leukemia cells. Clofarabine and PEG-asparaginase have never been used together to treat ALL. If a patient's leukemia has an abnormal chromosome, called the Philadelphia chromosome, he/she will also be given a pill called imatinib (also called Gleevec). The study will investigate if this regimen can be better tolerated with less side effects in the older adult leukemia patient rather than standard therapy.
Additionally, bone marrow or stem cell transplantation will be given to some participants to study whether it helps to prevent ALL from returning.
