White Matter Endophenotypes in Bipolar Disorder

White Matter Endophenotypes in Bipolar Disorder (GCRC #0284)

Protocol ID

09-222

Protocol Description

This research study will examine brain structure and how the brain works in people with bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder is a mood disorder in which people experience periods of extremely high and extremely low moods that are disruptive to their lives.

We hope to learn how much of the differences in brain structure and function in people with bipolar disorder may be caused by genetics.  Another purpose of the research is to study the relationship between the brain and the symptoms of bipolar disorder.

To do this we will study three groups of people:

A. People who have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
B. Brothers and/or sisters (siblings) of people with bipolar disorder, who themselves have not been diagnosed with a particular psychiatric condition.
C. People who do not have bipolar disorder or a sibling with bipolar disorder.

This study does not provide treatment.

Eligibility Criteria

Patients who have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, siblings of patients with bipolar disorder who are not personally affected by the illness, and healthy controls
