Brain Tumor Study

CCCWFU #91105: Phase III Double Blind, Placebo Controlled Study of Donepezil in Irradiated Brain Tumor Patients

Protocol ID

09-308

Protocol Description

This study is being done because having trouble remembering, speaking, or organizing one’s thoughts are common side effect for patients who have had brain tumors and have gotten radiation therapy.

The purpose of this study is to see if the study drug, donepezil (Aricept TM), will improve memory loss, confusion and slow thinking that have occurred after getting radiation treatments for a brain tumor. We will also see if donepezil improves mood and quality of life. Additionally, this study seeks to determine the safety and effectiveness of donepezil, compared to the placebo treatments (inactive pill).

The study drug, donepezil, has been approved by the FDA to treat dementia (memory loss, confusion and slow thinking), such as the kind seen in Alzheimer’s Disease. The use of donepezil to treat memory loss, confusion and slow thinking in patients who have received radiation due to brain cancer is considered experimental.
