Swimmers Rally for Brain Aneurysm Awareness

September 4, 2008
Oyster Bay High School students, area residents and volunteers participated in the second annual one-mile swim across Oyster Bay Cove, raising over $3,000 and increasing awareness for North Shore University Hospital’s (NSUH) Brain Aneurysm Center, part of the Harvey Cushing Institutes of Neuroscience. Eighteen swimmers took the plunge into the harbor on a picture-perfect day over Labor Day weekend to swim for a great cause. All swimmers completed the swim but were challenged by choppy waters and windy conditions. Assisting with the event was Joan Imhof, left, a brain aneurysm survivor, with her granddaughter Madison, 8, who both finished the one-mile swim a day earlier. Ms. Imhof, an avid swimmer who lives in Bayville, was treated two years ago at NSUH’s Brain Aneurysm Center, the only facility of its kind in Long Island or Queens with the most advanced treatment options for brain aneurysms. Ms. Imhof and the entire swim team were greeted by two staff members of the Brain Aneurysm Center, Nicole Salant, RN, second from right; Jennifer Laffey, ANP, right; and Elizabeth Sellman, vice president of neurosciences, North Shore-LIJ Health System.
