Glen Cove Hospital Raffle Raises over $6,200 for Cardiac Research
|
Cardiovascular disease – heart attack and stroke – affects more than 71 million Americans. It is the leading cause of death among men and women in this country. And heart disease doesn’t just happen to adults; approximately eight in 1,000 children are born with heart abnormalities, and they may develop heart disease later in childhood. To increase community awareness about heart disease and prevention, Glen Cove Hospital and the North Shore-LIJ Health System partnered with the American Heart Association (AHA) to raise more than $6,200 in an elaborate raffle to benefit life-saving research on cardiovascular disease. Rosemary D’Antonio, the hospital’s director of cardiology services, organized the third annual “Chinese Auction” in the hospital’s lobby, with 44 prizes donated by local merchants and individuals. With this type of raffle, individuals increase their chance of winning a prize by buying more tickets (“bidding”) for a specific item. Ann Marie Petrizzo, a pharmacy technician and Glen Cove resident, won $550 in the 50/50 raffle, with an equal amount donated to AHA.
On hand for the drawing of the tickets on September 12, was an energetic volunteer from the AHA, five year old Jack Schlichting of Long Island, who had open heart surgery at eight months to repair a hole in his heart. Jack was accompanied by his mother, Tina, a registered nurse. Jack is a ‘Red Cap’ ambassador for the AHA’s 2008 Long Island Start! Heart Walk to be held September 28 at Nassau Community College in Garden City. The event encourages people to live longer, heart-healthy lives through walking. Michael Dowling, North Shore-LIJ’s president and chief executive officer, is chairman of this year’s Long Island Heart Walk.
