Home Is Where the Heart Is

North Shore University Hospital Honors Cardio-Thoracic Graduating Class of 2007 Staff within North Shore University Hospital (NSUH) Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery recently paid tribute to patients operated on throughout this year. Over 50 “graduates” attended the program, showing few signs that they had undergone serious and, for some, life-threatening heart surgery.
This first-ever conference, led by Alan Hartman, MD, chairman of cardiovascular and thoracic surgery at NSUH and LIJ Medical Center, was geared toward educating the graduates about various topics dealing with heart health.
After a heart healthy breakfast, patients learned about the power of healing and laughter, nutritional tips for cardio patients, new advances in cardiac surgery, as well as the role of a physician’s assistant in cardiac surgery. Patients had the opportunity to ask questions about the various topics or discuss their concerns. Also in attendance were representatives from the “Mended Hearts Chapter 45,” a support group that offers help and encouragement to heart patients and their family by making hospital visits, distributing educational information and assisting heart disease rehabilitation programs for members and their families. Attendees walked away with heartwarming smiles, as they extended their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Hartman and his staff. As one patient said, “Dr. Hartman and his team took such tremendous care of me—the words I can never express. He and his team were like family.” The feeling felt by all the Graduates of 2007 was unanimous – “Home is Where the Heart Is.” Contact: Adina Conn (516) 465-2620/2600 |
