Philip Lanzkowsky, MD, chronicles story of controversy, perseverance and spirit that led to NY area’s first dedicated children’s hospitals The Donning Company Publishers, in partnership with Schneider Children’s Hospital, today announced the release of a new volume in the history of New York health care: How It All Began: The History of a Children’s Hospital. This limited-edition book celebrates the 25th anniversary of Schneider Children’s Hospital, and includes approximately 350 photographs and 500 pages of text that tells a story of controversy, perseverance and the spirit that gave rise to the building of the New York area’s first dedicated children’s hospital.
The book highlights the growth of the Department of Pediatrics at Long Island Jewish (LIJ) Hospital, and tells the story of the endurance required to convince the region’s local elected officials, community leaders, physicians and hospitals of the need for a children’s hospital. It describes the unrelenting advocacy of a small band of determined people who overcame what appeared to be insurmountable obstacles. The book also lists the hospital’s more than 1,300 alumni, along with the entire faculty and voluntary staff from 1954 to the present. The author, Philip Lanzkowsky, MD, an internationally known pediatrician and pediatric hematologist-oncologist, was responsible for the planning and programmatic development of the hospital starting in the early 1970s and has been the chief of staff and driving force since the 154-bed hospital opened in 1983. For the past two years, Schneider Children’s Hospital has been ranked among the nation’s best by US News and World Report. “Congratulations on the publication of How It All Began: The History of a Children’s Hospital,” Lynn Schneider, daughter of hospital benefactors Irving and Helen Schneider,” wrote in a message to Dr. Lanzkowsky. “Clearly, it has been quite an undertaking – and quite a journey.” Sol Wachtler, former chief judge of the New York State Court of Appeals and a long-time trustee of LIJ Medical Center who was on the board when the children’s hospital opened, said of the book, “It is a demonstration of how an invaluable resource can be created for a community and its children by the pioneering commitment of founders who relentlessly pursued their goal. It is also a tribute to Dr. Philip Lanzkowsky, who deserves so much credit for the creation of the hospital and the nurturing of its growth.” The book can be purchased for $65 at Amazon.com, most local book stores, the Schneider Children’s Hospital gift shop or by calling the hospital at 718-470-3201. Produced by Donning Company Publishers of Virginia Beach, VA, the book is the latest in Donning’s “Portrait of America” series. Media Contact: Laurie Locastro — 718-470-3201 |
