October 29, 2007

Louis Potters, MD, FACR, an internationally renowned expert in prostate cancer treatment and research, has been appointed chairman of radiation oncology at North Shore University Hospital and LIJ Medical Center.

“We have made great strides toward providing our patients with the most advanced cancer care available, and Dr. Potters will further strengthen our oncology services,” said Lawrence G. Smith, MD, chief medical officer of the North Shore-LIJ Health System. “In the area of prostate cancer care, he brings us an unparalleled level of expertise.”

Board-certified in internal medicine and radiation oncology, Dr. Potters comes to North Shore-LIJ from South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside, where he was associate director of radiation oncology and medical director of the New York Prostate Institute. Since 2006, he has also been an attending physician at Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, which is also a member of the North Shore-LIJ Health System.. Before joining South Nassau, he was an associate professor of radiation oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. In 1992, Dr. Potters became the first physician to offer prostate brachytherapy on Long Island during his tenure as an attending physician in radiation oncology at North Shore University Hospital.

In his new position, Dr. Potters plans to move aggressively to expand the Radiosurgery Center at North Shore University Hospital (NSUH), working closely with Michael Schulder, MD, director of the North Shore-LIJ Health System’s Harvey Cushing Brain Tumor Institute and T.S. Ravikumar, MD, chairman of surgery at NSUH and LIJ Medical Center. The Radiosurgery Center is home to the Novalis radiosurgery system, which is used to treat benign and malignant conditions in the brain as well as head and neck tumors and other tumors within the body, such as the liver, lung, prostate and spine.

Dr. Potters will also work closely with physicians at the Arthur Smith Institute for Urology, located at North Shore-LIJ’s Center for Advanced Medicine in Lake Success on developing a comprehensive prostate cancer service. “Our goal is to create a center of excellence where prostate cancer patients have all available options from expert physicians located under one roof.” he said. North Shore-LIJ offers more comprehensive cancer care than any other hospital in Nassau, Suffolk or Queens. “There is no other radiation oncology department that offers the complement of technology and quality on Long Island and Queens, and I look forward to enhancing the entire program as North Shore-LIJ expands its comprehensive cancer program.”

Dr. Potters is a member of the board of directors and chair of the Health Policy Council for the American Society of Therapeutic Radiology, the largest international association of radiation oncologists. He also sits on or chairs numerous committees and task forces of various medical societies, and has lectured and written extensively on prostate cancer and radiation oncology.
