North Shore University Hospital Introduces Groundbreaking Incisionless Surgery, Reducing Weight Gain in Post-Gastric Bypass Patients

November 13, 2008

North Shore University Hospital (NSUH) recently introduced a revolutionary new procedure to treat individuals who regained weight following gastric bypass surgery. The StomaphyX™ offers post-gastric bypass patients an incisionless solution for reducing the size of the stomach a second time to reverse weight gain. The procedure is done entirely through the mouth, without incisions, cutting or stitching.

Dominick Gadaleta, MD, and Lawrence Gellman MD, co-directors of bariatric surgery at NSUH, are the first surgeons to use the StomaphyX™ at the hospital, which is one of 24 in New York State designated as a Bariatric Center of Excellence by the American Society for Bariatric Surgery. Dr. Gadaleta said the procedure involves placing an endoscope through the patient’s mouth into the stomach pouch. The connection between the stomach pouch and small intestines is then sutured, resulting in slower emptying of the stomach, earlier satiety and more weight loss, he said. The procedure also shrinks the stomach pouch, similar to the outcome of the original gastric bypass procedure.

Dr. Gadaleta said StomaphyX™ is designed for morbidly obese patients who have gained back their weight after gastric bypass surgery. The device is considered by some surgeons to be the next evolution in minimally invasive techniques. The procedure is performed under visualization by an endoscope inserted down the central shaft of the StomaphyX™. Once inside the stomach, a small section of the stomach wall is suctioned up into the device and fastened with a suture-like fastener, creating a fold called a plication. As many as 10-20 plications may be created, depending on the needs of the patient. “Since there are neither incisions nor visible scars, patients can return to work as early as the next day,” said Dr.Gellman.

Using the StomaphyX™ procedure, Dr. Gadaleta operated on Amy Weiss of Great Neck in October. Originally, she had had gastric bypass in January 2001, resulting in the loss of more than 100 pounds. But over the years, Ms. Weiss found herself slowly starting to put the weight back on. “It’s not that I thought that bypass was a miracle cure,” explained Ms. Weiss, “but I hadn’t expected that over time, all the weight could come back on…You don’t realize that your stomach is a membrane and is capable of stretching.” Ms. Weiss said food is the only addiction one must learn to control in order for daily survival. “You can stop drinking or quit smoking, but your body needs sustenance in order to function,” she said.

North Shore University Hospital is one of three facilities on Long Island to offer the StomaphyX™.
