Michael Dowling, left, president and CEO of the North Shore-LIJ Health System; Susan Somerville, RN, executive director of North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, NY, and Martin Edelstein, MD, recently unveiled a Physicians' Remembrance Wall at NSUH in honor of deceased physicians who have made lasting contributions to patient care and the community.

The memorial wall was initiated by Martin Edelstein, MD, a Great Neck family physician on staff at North Shore University Hospital (NSUH) for many years. The project was a partnership between the health system and the NSUH Medical Staff Society. Located on the first floor of NSUH, the memorial wall was unveiled at a recent ceremony in which North Shore-LIJ also honored the memories of employees, volunteers and members of the health system’s board of trustees who have passed away over the past year. The ceremony, held before a standing room-only crowd in NSUH’s Rust Auditorium, included prayers, a candle-lighting service, the reading of the deceased’s names, and the release of white balloons of remembrance.
“It is only fitting to pay some kind of tribute to this very special group of dedicated physicians who we owe so much to and who continue to inspire us in the art and science of our profession,” said Dr. Edelstein.
Michael Dowling, president and chief executive officer of the North Shore-LIJ Health System, added, “None of us does anything alone. We are a large extended family influenced by many people who are no longer with us. They have been our inspiration, our guidance. They were our colleagues, teachers, mentors and moral compass. We honor their contributions and ask, ‘Are we good enough to maintain their legacies? What will people say about us when we are no longer here?’”
In addition to the 33 physicians honored, the memorial wall includes the name of a former administrator, Marc Rosenblatt, who worked tirelessly on behalf of the NSUH Medical Staff Society. Each January, staff and physicians will be invited to propose names to be added to the wall. Selections will be announced at the NSUH Medical Staff Society’s annual meeting in the spring.
