North Shore-LIJ Health System President and Chief Executive Officer Michael Dowling recently participated in a news conference organized by Nassau County Executive Nassau County Executive Thomas Suozzi to promote a new program called "Warriors to Work," a public-private partnership aimed at helping returning veterans find jobs. As part of an overall effort to help soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan acclimate to civilian life at home, Mr. Dowling committed to finding jobs within the North Shore-LIJ Health System for a minimum of 20 veterans this year -- double the number requested by Mr. Suozzi. The December 30th news conference outside county offices in Mineola featured retired Four-Star Army General Richard Cody, who served as the Army's vice chief of staff from June 2004 until last July. Believed to be the first program of its kind in the nation, Warriors to Work has received commitments from a coalition of labor unions and businesses across Long Island, including North Shore-LIJ, the Building and Construction Trades Council of Nassau and Suffolk Counties, the Long Island Federation of Labor, Bethpage Federal Credit Union and Adecco Staffing. |
