LIJ Cardiologist Saves Santa

December 31, 2008

Aleena King, 2, of Flushing, Queens, was among a group of amazed children who enjoyed one extra visit with Santa Claus on the day AFTER Christmas. Santa, aka Jerry Powers, of Tennessee, was in Queens preparing for his role as a department store Santa when he suffered chest pains. Dressed in full Santa regalia, Mr. Powers was rushed to LIJ Medical Center, where he was treated by cardiologist Barry Kaplan, MD, left. Santa Jerry, who was later told that he was within hours of losing his life, was so grateful to Dr. Kaplan and the hospital that saved him that he arranged to bring Teddy Bears to young patients at Schneider Children's Hospital after completing his appointed rounds on Christmas Day. After greeting dozens of children, Santa Jerry reported that, thanks to Dr. Kaplan's intervention, he never felt better.
