2008-2009 Updates from the Division
The Division of Kidney Diseases and Hypertension, its full-time faculty, trainees, clinical, research and educational activities continue to grow and integrate across the NS and LIJ campuses.
Promotions:
Dr. Madhu Bhaskaran has been promoted to Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine
Dr. Joseph Mattana has been promoted to Professor of Clinical Medicine at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
Appointments:
Dr. Joseph Mattana has been appointed Chief of the Division of Kidney Diseases and Hypertension at North Shore University Hospital and Long Island Jewish Medical Center.
Dr. Pravin Singhal has been appointed Chief Emeritus of the Division of Kidney Diseases and Hypertension.
Dr. Michael Gitman has been appointed Associate Chief of the Division of Kidney Diseases and Hypertension at North Shore University Hospital. Dr. Gitman also serves as Director of the Nephrology Fellowship Training Program at North Shore.
Dr. John Wagner has also been appointed Associate Chief of the Division of Kidney Diseases and Hypertension. He continues to serve as Section Head of Dialysis at Long Island Jewish Medical Center as well as Director of the Metabolic Support Service. Dr. Wagner also serves on the Board of Directors of IPRO and is the Council Chair of the End Stage Renal Disease Network of New York at IPRO
Dr. Mala Sachdeva has joined the division. She completed residency and nephrology fellowship training at Montefiore Medical Center. Her interests include vascular access complications and renal imaging and serves as Director of the Renal Imaging Service.
Dr. Kenar Jhaveri has joined the division. He completed residency training at Yale New Haven Hospital and nephrology fellowship training at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center. His interests include renal transplantation and renal complications in oncology patients
Dr. Richard Barnett has joined the division. He comes to us from the State University of Stony Brook with extensive experience in general nephrology, electrolyte disorders and electronic records development. He completed his residency training at John Hopkins Medical Center and nephrology training at Albert Einstein Medical Center.
Awards:
Dr. Alessandro Bellucci received the Physician of the Year: Lifetime Achievement Award given by the Department of Nursing at North Shore University Hospital
Dr. Sridevi Konkimalla, as a first year fellow, received Second Prize in the New York Society of Nephrology Fellows’ Research Night in May 2009 for her presentation “Role of mTOR in the development of HIV- associated Nephropathy and its inhibition as a therapeutic strategy” (Konkimalla S, Kumar D, Yadav A, Arora S, Madad A, Singhal PC).
The Janet and John Raggio Nephrology Institute of the North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System, received the IPRO Quality Award for ongoing commitment to raising public awareness of chronic kidney disease and enthusiastic support of the New York State Chronic Kidney Disease Coalition-CMS Chronic Kidney Disease Initiative.
Research:
The division’s research activities resulted in 14 publications including articles in the Journal of Biological Chemistry, the American Journal of Physiology and Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation. There were also 18 scientific presentations at national meetings over the past academic year. Dr. Singhal’s NIH-funded laboratory is a highly productive component of the division’s academic activity.
