A Brother's Search
As he prepares to load a tractor-trailer with more than $250,000 in medical supplies, equipment and medications that North Shore-LIJ donated for Haiti earthquake victims, Jean Jourdan writes a note on one of the supply crates, asking for help in locating his missing brother Guy. Mr. Jourdan, an employee of North Shore-LIJ Materials Management at the Center for Advanced Medicine in Lake Success, has worked for the health system since emigrating from Haiti 18 years ago. The medical supplies donated by North Shore-LIJ -- everything from crutches to antibiotics -- are being airlifted to a physician group called Hope for a Healthier Humanity, which has physicians on the ground in Haiti treating earthquake victims. Jeremy Boal, MD, medical director of LIJ Medical Center, took a lead role in coordinating relief efforts between the health system and Hope for a Healthier Humanity. North Shore-LIJ employees have also been extremely generous, donating more than $25,000 over the past week.
