About the Center for Bariatric Surgical Specialties
The Center for Bariatric Surgical Specialties is a comprehensive program to ensure your weight-loss success. We offer care before, during and after surgery, including medical screening, help with insurance approvals, nutritional guidance, post-surgical care and support groups.
Weight-loss or bariatric surgery helps severely and chronically overweight people who have not been able to lose weight with diet and exercise. It can be a successful, long-term treatment, according to the National Institutes of Health. A body mass index (BMI) above 40 (about 100 pounds overweight) indicates severe obesity and possible candidacy for surgery. Surgery may also be an option for those with lower BMI (35-40) who suffer from life-threatening problems such as high blood pressure, diabetes, sleep apnea or obesity-related heart disease.
Our center draws on the highly skilled and experienced team of Alan Geiss, MD, FACS; Colin Powers, MD, FACS; Heather McMullen, MD, FACS and Baiju Gohil, MD, FACS, all board-certified surgeons. Physicians specializing in internal medicine, psychology, anesthesiology, cardiology and nutritional medicine, along with nurses specially trained in the care of bariatric patients, are also part of the team.
Our program follows standards for the safe practices of bariatric surgery as set forth by the policies of the North Shore-LIJ Health System and the guidelines of the American Society of Bariatric Surgery.
