About the Division of Kidney Diseases and Hypertension

VISION:
The Division of Kidney Diseases and Hypertension of the North Shore-LIJ Health System is led by Division Chief, Joseph Mattana, MD. The full-time faculty is involved in varied activities, such as clinical care, teaching and research. However, the Division of Kidney Diseases and Hypertension is well-recognized for its research activities. The faculty has published 10 to 15 original articles in prestigious peer-reviewed journals for each of the last 10 years. Similarly, the faculty has been presenting 10 to 15 papers at the Annual Meeting of the American Society of Nephrology for the last 15 years. The division is very focused on state-of-the-art educational activities and innovative tools in nephrology education.

FACULTY:
Our faculty is young at heart and extremely suited for training new, enthusiastic internists. We have a diverse faculty who are truly dedicated to the development of enthusiastic fellows. Our trainees are heavily recruited for clinical and research positions in academic and community practice. We attract approximately 300 applications for four slots.

PROGRAM:

Why are we unique and why should you want to do your fellowship with us?

  1. LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION: Diverse ethnic backgrounds of New York City and Long Island mean a variety of pathology.
  2. Our fellows have a/ unique Attending-supervised dialysis experience in state-of-the-art dialysis facilities.
  3. Our Peritoneal Dialysis program is large; fellows don’t have to go elsewhere for their PD training.
  4. Our fellows see equally interesting cases of glomerular diseases, hypertension, vasculitis and transplantation.
  5. We use innovative teaching methods such as blogging, crosswords, anagrams, concept maps and role-playing to make nephrology a much more enjoyable experience.
  6. Our fellows match well in jobs and further educational fellowships.
  7. We are very energetic and approachable.
  8. Our fellows present at NKF and ASN meetings regularly with excellent posters and publish their work.
  9. Our fellows get well-balanced Outpatient Dialysis Nephrology, ICU Nephrology, Transplant Nephrology, Plasmapheresis, Geriatric Nephrology, Obstetric Nephrology, Cancer or Onco Nephrology and Cardio-nephrology and TPN experience.
  10. Our fellows are exposed to opportunities in basic science, clinical and education based research.

RESEARCH:

The division's research activities have been supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health for the last 17 years. In addition, faculty members have grants from the American Heart Association and the National Kidney Foundation. Dr. Pravin Singhal is actively involved in basic research. Thus, our fellows have a choice of working on a variety of research projects including glomerular pathology, renal physiology, molecular and cellular biology, matrixoxidation and remodeling and kidney genetics.

Clinical research takes place in the division under Dr.Steven Fishbane, Dr.Azzour Hazzan, Dr Mala Sachdeva and Dr. Kellie Calderon in Dialysis and Transplantation. Dr. Madhu Bhaskaran, along with the Transplant Center, is involved in research in immunology and transplantation.

Dr. Hitesh Shah, Dr.Kenar Jhaveri and Dr. Joseph Mattana have been in the forefront of education, developing innovative teaching tools to help nephrology be an enjoyable experience. Creative tools in conferences such as crosswords, anagrams, role-playing and concept maps are part and parcel of our fellowship program.
