Addictive Disorders
Substance abuse and dependence are common disorders that involve the overuse of alcohol or drugs. Addiction develops over time and is a chronic and relapsing illness.
Substance abuse describes a pattern of the abuse of illegal substances or the abusive use of legal substances leading to significant problems, such as failure to attend work/school, legal problems, putting oneself in dangerous situations, etc. Substance dependence is used to describe continued use of drugs or alcohol, even when severe problems related to their use have developed. Chemical dependence is the compulsive use of drugs or alcohol and the inability to stop using them regardless of the problems they cause.
Drug abuse and addiction are treatable disorders.
