Alan Hartman, MD

North Shore University Hospital (NSUH) and LIJ Medical Center
Dr. Hartman oversees one of New York State's busiest and most successful cardiothoracic programs. The combined department at NSUH and LIJ includes 11 full-time cardiac surgeons who perform more than 1,700 open-heart surgeries annually, as well as thoracic surgeons (including three full time) who perform more than 1,500 thoracic surgeries a year.
Dr. Hartman, who joined NSUH in 2002 as chairman and was named head of LIJ's cardiothoracic program in 2007, is also one of New York's most active open-heart surgeons, with an annual caseload of about 230. He is a clinical associate professor of the New York University School of Medicine.
Prior to coming to North Shore-LIJ, Dr. Hartman was an attending cardiothoracic surgeon at Winthrop University Hospital and the former chief of cardiothoracic surgery at Stony Brook University Hospital.
Dr. Hartman is a fellow of many prestigious surgical societies including the American College of Surgeons, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the American College of Cardiology, the Society of Critical Care Medicine and the American College of Chest Physicians.
The co-author of more than 45 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters, Dr. Hartman is a frequent lecturer and conference presenter at hospitals and healthcare facilities in the New York metropolitan area.
A graduate of Mount Sinai School of Medicine, Dr. Hartman completed his general surgery residency at New York University Medical Center University Hospital, Bellevue Hospital and the Manhattan Veterans Administration (VA) Hospital. He completed a two-year fellowship in the Cardiothoracic Surgery Program at NYU Hospital, Bellevue and the Manhattan VA Hospital.
