The North Shore-LIJ Administrative Fellowship Program enhanced my scholarly education with practical experience gained through the four rotations of my fellowship. The rotations I completed in the emergency department at Long Island Jewish Medical Center exposed me to a great number and variety of projects and allowed me to develop the many different skills required of a hospital administrator.

During my emergency department rotation, I worked closely with patients and families. The clinical aspects of this rotation, such as transporting patients with the nurses and doing comfort rounds for patients, were also particularly rewarding. I saw management theory in action as I participated in the day-to-day operations of the department. I collaborated with senior administrators to develop operational plans for the new emergency department and experienced firsthand the process by which a new unit is built and opened. I also worked closely with the associate executive director for nursing to complete a staffing and coverage analysis project as well as an analysis of how the opening of several new units should be sequenced to optimize staffing coverage and patient care.

My fellowship experience offered me a well-rounded rotation that enabled me to experience everything from front-line operations to high-level strategic planning.
