American Cancer Society Joins Feinstein Institute
in a Celebration of Cancer Research

MANHASSET, NY – Celebrating the road from basic science to cancer care, The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research hosted a special reception Wednesday to recognize investigators who seek to understand malignant transformation and optimize tumor therapy, and to thank the American Cancer Society (ACS) for its longstanding commitment to researching cancer and developing more effective treatments for a wide range of neoplastic diseases.

Thomas L. Rothstein, MD, PhD, Head of the Feinstein’s Center for Oncology and Cell Biology, noted that The Feinstein Institute is home to a host of research projects that probe cancer from the perspectives of molecular mechanisms, early detection, and therapeutic options.  ACS has provided irreplaceable support at key junctures in the careers of cancer investigators at the Feinstein Institute, most recently in the form of a Research Scholar award to Eric Shi, MD, PhD, for his work with breast cancer. As a result of ACS’s forward-looking funding, the organization has jumpstarted critical areas of investigation.  In an encouraging sign, the overall mortality from cancer has been declining in the United States.  Since its inception in 1946, ACS has invested more than $3 billion in cancer research and 42 ACS-funded investigators have gone on to win the Nobel Prize. In the past 25 years, ACS has provided more than $21.7 million in research funding to Long Island institutions. In turn, Feinstein investigators support the work of ACS through service on the Board of Advisors and participation in study section evaluation of new grant applications.

“We are honored to celebrate the American Cancer Society, and their wonderful support of science,” said Kevin J. Tracey, MD, chief executive of the Feinstein Institute. “Their grants have supported thousands of scientists for more than 60 years, leading directly and indirectly to major improvements in our current understanding and treatment of cancer.”
