Welcome to the Bariatric Surgery Program at Long Island Jewish Medical Center and North Shore University Hospital. We recognize that morbid obesity is a chronic disease and requires aggressive management. Undergoing weight loss surgery is a major decision, and we understand that you may have many questions and fears. Our goal is to provide you with the correct information about the consequences of severe obesity and the benefits of weight loss surgeries.

The Bariatric Surgery Program follows standards compliant with the safe practices of bariatric surgery as set forth by the policies of the North Shore-LIJ Health System and the guidelines of the American Society of Bariatric Surgery.

North Shore University Hospital - A Center of Excellence

The Bariatric Surgery Program at North Shore University Hospital draws on the highly skilled and experienced team of Dominick Gadaleta, MD and Larry Gellman, MD. The program follows standards compliant with the safe practices of Bariatric Surgery as set forth by the policies of the North Shore-LIJ Health System and the guidelines of the American Society of Bariatric Surgery.

In 2006, North Shore University Hospital and its bariatric surgeons, Dr. Gadaleta and Dr. Gellman, were recognized as a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence by the American Society for Bariatric Surgery's Surgical Review Corp., confirming that they have attained the levels of optimal performance required to ensure the best outcome for patients.

 

Bariatric surgery helps severely and chronically overweight people who have found diet and exercise to be ineffective. It can be a successful, long-term treatment, according to the National Institute of Health. A body mass index (BMI) above 40 (about 100 pounds overweight) indicates severe obesity and candidacy for surgery. Surgery may also be an option for those with lower BMI (35-40) who suffer from life-threatening problems such as high blood pressure, diabetes, sleep apnea or obesity-related heart disease.
