Become an Emergency Volunteer

The Patient Care Liaison (PCL) program was designed to provide comfort and support to patients and families. Trained volunteers, who can be identified by the vests and badges they wear, assist patients and families in many ways. Their work frees physicians and nurses to provide emergency medical care.

As a PCL, you will:

  • Meet and greet patients
  • Direct patients in the triage and registration process
  • Make sure patients' belongings are safe and secure
  • Communicate between doctors and nurses caring for patients, and families in the waiting room
  • Make telephone calls to patients' families when requested
  • Make sure patients are comfortable by bringing blankets, pillows and food when allowed

Becoming a PCL
To become a PCL, you must complete a volunteer application and provide two references. If you meet program requirements, you will attend both a hospital orientation and an Emergency Department orientation. You must be able to volunteer four hours a week for at least six months.

For more information, call the PCL coordinator at (631) 968-3970.
