Biofeedback
Biofeedback is a technique where one learns to be aware of and control specific physiological processes. It utilizes a group of techniques that teach self-regulation of one's body. Biofeedback is often aimed at changing habitual reactions to stress that can cause pain or disease.
Neurofeedback, or EEG biofeedback, is used to improve performance and behaviors such as attention, memory and cognitive functioning. It is performed using a specialized EEG device that exercises the brain using computer games. There are many clinical studies demonstrating the effectiveness of this technique.
Principles
Feedback of physical responses such as skin temperature and muscle tension provides information to help patients recognize a relaxed state. This feedback system may also act as a kind of reward for reducing tension.
