Bone Marrow Transplant at NSUH
|
The Bone Marrow Transplant Unit (BMTU) at North Shore University Hospital/Manhasset has been in existence for over 15 years and we have performed over 700 transplants. Autologous, as well as allogeneic transplants, related and unrelated transplants, bone marrow and peripheral stem cell transplants, and cord blood transplantation have all been performed. The transplantation unit is a member of the National Marrow Donor Program as a Transplant Center and Collection Center. A Collection Center performs the harvesting of donor marrow for transplant patients all over the country. Among the diseases that are treated in the BMTU are leukemias, lymphomas, multiple myeloma, various children's cancers, immunodeficiency syndromes, breast cancer and germ cell tumors. Emphasis is on a multidisciplinary approach to treating the patient. Particular attention is paid to the physical, emotional and social needs of the patients and their families. Certified Oncology Social Workers are available to perform individual, group and family counseling for all transplant patients. Of note, the bone marrow transplant unit has received a "Best Practice" commendation from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. The ten-bed inpatient unit is focused on the adult population. |
