Core Management Development Program

About the Program

This program is structured to provide participants with a unique educational opportunity enhanced through experiential learning.  The program concludes with real-time Capstone project conducted at the attendees’ facility. Healthcare is experiencing an ongoing transformation relative to service delivery. Consequently, healthcare organizations are faced with mergers, cost initiatives and changes in infrastructure that have led to the increased need for proactive, innovative leaders and managers. The challenges that healthcare faces today require its leaders to effectively manage change and meet the business goals of the organization, while simultaneously fulfilling its mission to provide quality patient care.

Continuing management and leadership education is vital in today’s competitive environment. Such efforts will help maintain a high level of efficiency while allowing employees to obtain the skills necessary to excel in an increasingly competitive market. This program introduces participants to the key concepts of efficient leadership within today’s health system. It is designed to enhance managers’ professional growth and development at all levels of the organization from both clinical and nonclinical areas. Experts and senior leaders from across the health system facilitate classes.

Core Management Development Program Guidelines

Before embarking on the Core Mangement Development Program, you should disuss your interest with your supervisor.  Together you can disucss which "Leader Track" to take part in.  The Core Management Development Program is comprised of 10 classes in total plus a two-hour Orientation.  Six of these classes and Orientation will be taken together within a "Section."  The additional 4 classes should be chosen from within your "Leader Track."  However, you do have the option to select classes from other Leader Tracks.  Some other things you should know are:

  • All students will register for ONE Section (6 classes plus 1 two-hour Orienation).
  • Students will then register for 4 classes within their respective "Leader Track." However, students do have the option to select classes from other Leader Tracks.
  • Many courses will include pre-work.  Pre-work assignments MUST be completed before arriving to class.
  • After the 10 sessions plus the Orientation are completed, the program will culminate in a  Capstone Project.   The results of which are reported-out within your own facility and may include a report out to Health System Senior Leadership.

What is a Capstone Project?

The CLI Core Management Development Program cullminates with the capstone project. It is conducted by health system managers (and coached and mentored by the CLI OPS team), Capstone uses a project management framework wherein facility-specific teams are assigned operational issues by hospital leadership to identify root causes of an operational issue and use appropriate methodologies to generate solutions.

Capstone projects follow a methodology that teaches and reinforces team building, time management, planning, communication, data collection and analysis, critical thinking, gaining commitment, presentation skills, and PowerPoint skills.

Each team and team member demonstrate the skills learned throughout the program at a scheduled report-out for all Capstone teams.

Some examples of Capstone Projects are:

  • Improve the efficiency of patient transport throughout the hospital
  • Examine and reduce the causes of excessive noise on patient units
  • Identify and remove barriers to patient flow on a nursing unit
  • Improve compliance with smoking cessation education mandates
