LAKE SUCCESS, NY -- Dan Abrams, chief legal analyst of NBC News and MSNBC-TV, and cancer survivor, was the keynote speaker at the North Shore-LIJ Health System’s Cancer Survivors’ Day celebration. The third annual event was hosted jointly by North Shore University Hospital and LIJ Medical Center outside the Monter Cancer Center in Lake Success.

The very private, cancer-free Mr. Abrams shared his moving, personal story of battling testicular cancer at age 37, thereby sending out a wake-up call to men of all ages to educate themselves about the disease. Enjoying life and living cancer-free was the message of the day as more than 1,700 survivors and guests enjoyed a light lunch, danced and toasted to continued good health under the largest tent ever constructed on Long Island and Queens. In addition to Mr. Abrams, other survivor speakers were Nicholas Torres, a prostate cancer survivor from Bellerose, Queens and Jacqueline Hickey, a lung cancer survivor from New Hyde Park, Long Island.

Another highlight of the day was the presentation of a lifetime achievement award to Vincent Vinciguerra, MD, the long-time chief of the Don Monti Division of Medical Oncology/Hematology at North Shore University Hospital, who was recognized for his more than 30 years of work in helping cancer patients and innovative research.
