The administrative fellowship was a perfect transition from graduate school into the workplace; it was a unique opportunity to apply my master’s degree while working within a culture that still encourages and supports learning. The fellowship became for me an individualized journey to explore many parts of the North Shore-LIJ Health System, and ultimately, to begin my own career.
The fellowship gave me an opportunity to try out different working environments within the health system, including a community hospital, a tertiary hospital, and outpatient program. In addition to getting an overview of hospital administration, I was able to delve deeper in certain areas through special projects. Throughout the year I worked on various assignments in the areas of finance, operation, strategic planning and patient care. The flexibility of the fellowship allowed me to consider each atmosphere and type of work as a fit for me.
An extraordinary part of my fellowship experience was attending important system-level meetings with senior administrators from all the facilities. It was exciting to be included at high-level meetings that discussed the current and future state of the health system. But above all, the most valuable part of my fellowship experience was the support and insight I received from the people I worked alongside, from the front-line staff all the way up to the senior leaders of the health system.
I am grateful for the skills and knowledge I gained during my administrative fellowship. I could not have gotten a well-rounded experience anywhere else. I know that my North Shore-LIJ fellowship experience will serve me well in my future career.
