Chorionic Villus Sampling

Chorionic villus sampling (CVS) is a procedure in which a small sample of tissue is obtained from the placenta early in pregnancy. Chorionic villi surround a part of the sac where the fetus develops and eventually become the placenta. These villi are derived from the same embryonic origin as the fetus, therefore the tissue sampled reflects the genetic makeup of the fetus. CVS is used to diagnose chromosomal abnormalities such as Down syndrome and other genetic diseases in your baby.
